| The University of Minnesota is a world-class institution of graduate and undergraduate education and scholarly research. The Twin Cities campus is made up of 19 colleges offering 161 bachelor's degrees, 218 master's degrees, 114 doctoral degrees, and 5 professional degrees. Total enrollment at the University is about 40,000 including about 7,200 graduate students. About 28 percent of the graduate students are from countries other than the US. The campus is actually three campuses: the East and West Bank campuses, located on either side of the Mississippi River just downstream from downtown Minneapolis, and the St. Paul Campus, situated in a pleasant residential neighborhood a few miles from downtown St. Paul. The campuses are connected by free intercampus bus service. Travel time by bus between the St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses is approximately 15 minutes.
On the St. Paul Campus, where the Department of Applied Economics is located, students enjoy both the peace and quiet of a small campus - with green space, crop lands, and animal barns - and the advantages of a large urban campus - such as research libraries, entertainment, and recreation facilities. The St. Paul Campus Student Center offers dining facilities, bookstore, small art gallery, weekly movies and cultural events, and the Outdoor Store where students can rent or purchase outdoor recreational equipment.
The University has an outstanding library, with holdings of more than 5 million catalogued volumes and 45,000 serial publications. Major libraries are located on each of the three campuses that make up the Twin Cities campus. The University also has excellent computer facilities with fifteen public PC and Macintosh labs - four on the St. Paul Campus - and network connections in dormitory rooms. All microcomputer labs are equipped with spreadsheet, statistical, and word processing software. The labs and Internet kiosks, located in public spaces around the University, offer direct email and internet connections.
The University of Minnesota also has an extensive sports and recreation complex. The newly-remodeled St. Paul facility includes a full size gym, indoor and outdoor track, activity room, indoor pool, fitness center, weight room, outdoor tennis, squash and racquetball courts, and a climbing wall. The complex on the East Bank campus includes a aquatic center, fitness center, racquetball and squash courts, indoor and outdoor tennis, gymnasium, and indoor and outdoor tracks.
