The Mary A. and Robert B. Litterman Endowed Fellowship
The Mary A. and Robert B. Litterman Endowed Fellowship was established in January 2001 with a generous gift from the Littermans. Dr. Mary A. Litterman earned her B.S. and Ph.D. in agricultural economics, and Dr. Robert B. Litterman received his Ph.D. in economics, both from the University of Minnesota. Their gift acknowledges the excellence of the Department of Applied Economics and provides supplemental support for a graduate student in the program,
2007-2008 - Irma Arteaga received the Mary A. and Robert B. Litterman Fellowship to support her in her first summer in the Ph.D. program. Irma is from Peru and joined our program after completing a master’s degree in public policy at the Humphrey Institute. Her interests are in household behavior and education policy, and this past year she worked as a research assistant for Professor Judy Temple on a project concerned with early childhood education.
The Sam C. Hsieh Graduate Fellowship  | | Clint Pecenka | in Applied Economics
The Sam C. Hsieh Graduate Fellowship in Applied Economics was established in April 2006. This fellowship was endowed through gifts from the children of the late Sam Chung Hsieh—Wen-Ning Hsieh, Wen Hsieh Lin, Wen-An Hsieh, and Wendy Hsieh. Dr. Sam Chung Hsieh received his Ph.D. in agricultural economics from the University of Minnesota in 1957. In 1990 he received the University of Minnesota Alumni Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award and our department’s Outstanding Alumni Award.
2007-2008 - The Sam Chung Hsieh Fellowship was awarded to Clinton Pencenka for his first summer in the Ph.D. program. Clint joined the program after completing a master’s degree in public policy from the Humphrey Institute. His interests are in international development and trade and labor economics—with special emphasis on Latin America. This past year he had a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship to take advanced courses in Portuguese. He also worked for the Minnesota Population Center.
The  | | Steve Aultman | CHS Graduate Fellowship
The CHS Graduate Fellowship was established in June 2007 through generous gifts from the CHS Foundation the major giving entity of CHS Inc., a diversified energy, grains and foods Fortune 500 company committed to providing the essential resources that enrich lives. This fellowship provides support for a graduate student studying digital information systems, web-based delivery and decision-making tools, farm management, or disciplines applicable to cooperatives and agribusiness.
2007-08 - Stephen Aultman is the first recipient of the CHS Fellowship. He joined the department in September 2007 after completing his B.S. and M.S. degrees in agricultural and applied economics at Virginia Tech. His research interests are in two broad areas: (1) market based solutions to environmental and natural resource problems and (2) problems related to pesticide use and the development of pesticide resistant pest populations.
